Filles a Marier The Filles a Marier was an volunteer immigration program to populate New France. Unlike the Fille De Rois, the Filles a Marier were not sponsored by the crown, and were sent over with no promise of a dowry. These young girls, estimated at around 262, emigrated between the years 1634 and 1663. Many came from urban locales, the daughters of peasants, day labourers, and craftsmen. A small number however came from the business class and minor nobility.
Unlike their prospects in France, these young women were given the right refuse a prospective husband. They volunteered to face the hardships of a budding colony, with the threat of death and disaster, not only on the voyage but once they reached their new homes. They made this voyage as the alternative was being forced into an arranged marriage, if their family could afford a dowry, or to enter the Church, if the family could not.
Upon arrival in New France, the girls were housed by the church while waiting to find a husband. They were given protection, a temporary home, and a freedom unknown to most young women in France.
